Ten-question diagnostic

Where should you start?

Ten quick questions to pick a starting page. Answer honestly for yourself. Nothing leaves your browser, nothing is saved, and there is no score.

This is a routing aid, not a test. The result is a suggested page, not a level or a credential. Portfolio policy.

1. Python functions

Can you write a Python function that takes a dict and returns one of its values, or a default if the key is missing?

2. JSON

Given {"order_id": "1042", "state": "shipped"}, can you read the state in code and explain what a missing key would do?

3. REST

Can you explain the difference between a GET and a POST to an API, and when a request should have a body?

4. SQL joins

Can you write a join between an orders table and a shipments table, and say which rows a left join keeps that an inner join drops?

5. Git

Can you clone a repository, make a branch, commit a change, and see what changed with git diff?

6. Docker

Can you build an image from a Dockerfile, run it with an environment variable, and explain why a secret should not be baked into the image?

7. HTTP status codes

Do you know what 200, 401, 403, 404, and 500 usually mean, and which one a missing token should return?

8. Deployed an API

Have you put a small API somewhere other people (or other programs) could call it, and rolled it back or restarted it when it broke?

9. Embeddings

Can you explain what an embedding is, and why a vector search can miss an exact id that a keyword search finds?

10. Auth basics

Can you explain the difference between authentication and authorization, and why a group claimed in a user's message is not a group membership?
